What is Pétanque?
Pétanque (pronounced “pay-tonk”) is a traditional French boules game that originated in Provence over a century ago. Players toss hollow metal balls (boules) toward a small wooden target ball called the “cochonnet” (little pig). The goal is simple: get your boules closer to the cochonnet than your opponent. It’s part skill, part strategy, and all fun!

How to Play
Stand in the Box
Stand in the throwing box — both feet must stay inside when throwing
Toss the Cochonnet
Throw the small target ball 6-10 meters away to start the round
Throw Your Boules
Take turns tossing your boules, trying to land closest to the cochonnet
Score Points
Score 1 point for each boule closer than your opponent’s nearest — first to 13 wins!
Pro Tips for Beginners
- Pointing — Gently lob your boule to land near the cochonnet
- Shooting — Throw harder to knock away an opponent’s boule
- Backspin — Add spin to control where your boule stops
- Read the terrain — Slopes and bumps affect where boules roll
- Have fun! — It’s a social game, so enjoy the conversation
