What is Pétanque?
Pétanque (pronounced “pay-tonk”) is a traditional French boules game that originated in Provence over a century ago. Players toss hollow metal balls (boules) toward a small wooden target ball called the “cochonnet” (little pig). The goal is simple: get your boules closer to the cochonnet than your opponent. It’s part skill, part strategy, and all fun!
Why We Love Pétanque
It’s the perfect naturist sport — relaxed, social, and enjoyable at any pace. No running, no sweating, just good company and friendly competition. Grab a cold drink, step up to the terrain, and let the games begin!
How to Play
Pro Tips for Beginners
- Pointing — Gently lob your boule to land near the cochonnet
- Shooting — Throw harder to knock away an opponent’s boule
- Backspin — Add spin to control where your boule stops
- Read the terrain — Slopes and bumps affect where boules roll
- Have fun! — It’s a social game, so enjoy the conversation
Equipment Available
Don’t have your own boules? No problem! Star Ranch has sets available for guests to borrow. Just ask at the office and we’ll get you set up. All skill levels are welcome — our experienced players are always happy to teach newcomers the ropes.
